MJSA — 2007 Innovation Award

Jewelry is an art with interrelated flowing lines that evoke emotion. Hand-sculpted shapes are often the beginning of the creative process, and getting those shapes into an accurate digital format to maintain the artist’s intent has always been a challenging process.

In spring, the Journal of Manufacturing Jewelers and Suppliers of America presented NextEngine with their 2007 Innovation Award, recognizing the scanner as a digital design tool to speed the creative and manufacturing processes.

Armer Designs — Expanding Capabilities

Small businesses are expanding their CAD and CAM services with reverse modeling. Mark Armer used RapidWorks to meet a customer's need to model an F-15 fighter jet control stick for integration into production of a test flight simulator. He quickly combined complex surfaces and simple prismatic shapes to define the part and save it as an IGES solid file.

"This is a job I would have passed on to someone else before owning the NextEngine system, and it feels good to have such a quick payback."
— Mark Armer

Chris Cowan — Speeding Animation

“Animating a human face used to take 48 hours for an experienced animator. Now it can be done in 24 hours. The combination of NextEngine scan data with some new beta control point software called Topogun is really helping me get more done with the hours I have.” — Chris Cowan, Origami Digital

Machining from Scan Data

Light-Metal Guitar at WESTEC

In an exciting live demo of how NextEngine fits right in with modern machine shops, Fadal machined an aluminum copy of a Taylor “T5” electric guitar at the WESTEC show in Los Angeles.

Scanned with the NextEngine system, the guitar was reverse modeled with RapidWorks, and a tool path was created from a Solid Part file using Mastercam. The result was cut on a Fadal 6030 from a solid block of 6061 Aluminum.

Smooth, straightforward workflow. Impressive results.

Taking it on the Road — In-Field Scanning

When scanning in the field, there are always conditions that present challenges, but most NextEngine users have been able to get great results with a little planning. This image shows elements of an in-field scanning system.

Feel free to contact us for a checklist and suggested in-field scanning tools.

FSM Show —
Crime Scene Test with the FBI

At the IAFMS (International Association for Forensic Metrology and Science) in Houston TX, NextEngine teamed up with Leica to digitize a mock crime scene.

NextEngine provided high-detail scanning of footprints and other close-up areas. Leica used their long-range scan data to provide a 3D overview map of the crime scene.
